Lawn Care Minimum Charge and Trip Fees

How to set a minimum mow price and a trip fee you can say out loud, so small, far, or ‘just a quick one’ stops stop stealing the day.

Dense suburban street of similar houses and lawns on one route

A $35 stop across town is not a deal. It is a donation that looks like a job. Minimums and trip fees are how you stop selling showing up at the same price as a yard next to four others.

Use the hourly rate calculator for the floor, service-area radius for the map, and how to price jobs for the rest of the card.

Build the minimum from time, not pride

Economic time = on-site + allocated travel + a slice of dump/fuel if that is how you run.

If target revenue is ~$110/hour and the smallest honest visit is 25 minutes economic, the floor is about $46, so a published minimum of $50–$60 is not greed. It is rounding. Tiny townhome lots still require a truck.

    SituationDefault
Inside dense zone, easy lotPackage, above minimum
Tiny lot, long driveMinimum + trip or decline
Edge of radiusTrip line or higher package
    Opposite side of townNo
Small lot that still requires a truck visit
A small lawn next to five others can beat a large lawn you have to hunt. Minimums protect the hunt.

How to say the trip fee

On the quote: “Travel outside our Tuesday zone: $X.”

On the phone: “We can do it on the day we are already on that side, or it is a trip fee. We do not cross town for a single small stop.”

Do not say “gas is expensive” like a complaint. Say density. Dump and fuel can be their own lines when they are real.

    Worked example

    • Target $110/hour
    • 15-minute drive off route, 20-minute mow → 35 minutes → ~$64
    • Published: $65 visit or $25 trip + $50 minimum
    • Customer 12 minutes into the zone: standard $70 weekly, no trip

Write exceptions with an end date

Fill-in stops can waive a trip fee for 60 days while you build a pocket. Calendar it. If the pocket never appears, raise or drop.

Quote that can show a trip line
If the fee is not on the quote, the crew will eat it at the curb.

Scripts that do not sound like a shakedown

Tiny lot, long drive: “The grass is small. The visit is not. Minimum is $X because we still roll a truck.”

Edge of zone: “We can add you when we have two other stops on that side, or it is a $Y trip. We do not cross town for one.”

Neighbor of a good route: “We can waive travel for 60 days while we fill that pocket. After that it is the trip line or we pause.”

Write those three on a card in the truck. Crews who invent a fourth script will give the visit away.

    Review the map every quarter

Pins drift. A stop that was “edge” becomes middle when you add density (drop the trip. A stop that was middle becomes a hero when you lose the neighbors) add the fee or let them go. Service area is a living drawing, not a slogan on the website.

If fuel spiked, do not hide it inside a trip fee. Trip is location. Fuel is the floor or a dated surcharge. See fuel and dump.

    HOAs and tiny lots

An HOA common can be huge and still need a minimum if it is a one-off across town. Size is not the only input. Appearance is. A small lot on a dense street can be a great $60. A small lot as the only pin in a zip is a $60 loss. Say that without apology.

Townhomes sometimes want you to split one visit across four owners. That is four invoices and one windshield. Minimum applies per stop unless they pay as one bill-to. Do not become their bookkeeper for free.

If a competitor has no minimum, they are either closer, lying, or volunteering. You do not have to match a volunteer. You have to fill a dense day. The waitlist is the alternative to a bad yes.

    How MowProHQ keeps minimums honest

MowProHQ can hold package prices, trip lines, and Regular vs Cash on the same quote the job uses. Free core, two seats. Put the minimum in the catalog, not in your head. Calculator first, then sign up.

Minimums price showing up. Trip fees price empty miles. Both belong on the quote before the truck moves. Waive only with an end date and a pocket you actually intend to build. Review the map when pins drift. Do not hide fuel inside a trip line. Do not match a volunteer who has no minimum and no future. Dense days beat heroic yeses. The waitlist is a product. Use it.

Say the minimum is the price of the truck, not the grass. Say the trip is empty miles, not a punishment. Waive only with a dated pocket you will actually build. Review pins when neighbors appear or disappear. Do not hide diesel inside a trip line. Townhome splits are one windshield, one bill-to or four minimums. Competitors with no minimum are closer, lying, or volunteering. You need a dense day, not a matching volunteer.

When a realtor wants five empty houses ‘real quick,’ that is five minimums or one bill-to with travel priced as a pocket. Do not let charm turn five windshields into one cheap favor. Write the pocket date. If the other four never appear, the trip fee returns or the work ends. Charm is not density. Density is other paying pins on the same day. That is the only discount that does not lie.

    Frequently asked questions

What is a fair minimum charge for lawn mowing?
A minimum is the smallest visit that still clears your target revenue for the economic time of showing up, not the cheapest neighbor text. Many shops set it from 25–30 minutes of loaded time including a slice of travel.
When should I add a trip fee for lawn care?
When the stop sits outside your dense zone or adds empty miles you cannot batch. A trip fee is cheaper than a hero route. A polite no is cheaper than a small fee on a bad pin.
How do I explain a trip fee to a homeowner?
You are not charging for grass. You are charging for the windshield. Offer a higher package that includes travel, or waitlist them until you have a pocket in that area.
Should the minimum apply to add-ons too?
Add-ons can have their own minimums (leaf, aeration). Do not let a $15 bed weed attach to a $0 ‘we were already there’ if it adds 20 minutes. Put the unit on the quote.
Is a trip fee the same as a fuel surcharge?
No. A trip fee is location. Fuel belongs in the cost floor or a published surcharge policy. Stacking mystery fees after the visit is how you get a one-star story.
Can I waive the minimum for a neighbor of a good route?
Yes if it truly fills a gap and you write an end date. Permanent exceptions become the new minimum, for everyone they tell.
How do trip fees relate to service area?
Draw a radius first. Inside: standard package. Edge: small premium or trip line. Outside: decline or wait for a new pocket. See the service-area guide.
